What happens to the things I don't want anymore?

Accepted Answer

Before we even start categorizing, we'll talk through a plan together, so you know exactly what's going to happen to your things and when. Broken items go to trash, and recyclables get recycled responsibly. For everything else, we'll decide together: some things get donated, some get upcycled, some might go to a clothing shelf or somewhere like Goodwill. One carload of haul-away is included; if there's more, we'll talk about it ahead of time (extra hauls may come with a small additional charge, and have to stay local). Every community's resources are a little different, so this is never one-size-fits-all. It's your plan, built with you, not for you.

Do I need to be home during the session?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Once we've agreed on a plan together, for instance, if we've decided all your books get sorted onto the shelf by category, I can go ahead and get to work on that. But anything involving decisions about what stays, what goes, or where things get put back needs you there. That's where the real transfer of knowledge happens: working side by side, sorting through things together, so you actually learn a system you can maintain long after I'm gone.

What happens if we don't finish in the time booked?

Accepted Answer

We'll talk through realistic expectations together before we ever get started, so you have a good sense of what's possible in the time we have. For example, "fully organizing all your Legos by color" is a different time commitment than "getting all the Legos into one bucket so we can move on to the rest of the room." I'll check in with you throughout the day to make sure we're staying on track, so there aren't surprises. Setting the right expectations together is honestly one of the most important parts of working together.

I'm overwhelmed by a number of spaces in my home. Where's the best place to get started?

Oh, I hear this so often, and I want you to know: feeling overwhelmed by more than one space doesn't mean you're behind, or that you've let things get "too bad." It just means life happened, the way it does for all of us.
Here's what I'd say: we don't have to fix everything at once, and honestly, trying to is usually what keeps people stuck. My suggestion is always to start with the space that's costing you the most, day to day. Not necessarily the messiest room, but the one you walk past and feel a little pang every time. Sometimes that's a kitchen counter you can't cook on. Sometimes it's a closet you avoid opening. That's usually where starting small gives you the biggest sense of relief.
Know that you don't have to have it all figured out before you reach out. That's actually my job.
